This thesis doesn't use modern Conradian Criticism's method which bears a trend of political culture study, but according to his focus on human nature and people's state of being, interprets the cultural spirit in his novels. With regards to modern interpretation's breaking away from original text's meaning, this thesis pays more respect to the author's original intention. Based on Conrad's multi-cultural background and conflicting values, it advances its argument: "estrangement and commitment" is the conflict which pervades Conrad's works, and from this point of view, he observes and judges life and human nature. Although due to his own limits, he could not get rid of confusion, nor give the truth, his efforts in literature awaken profound thoughts and feelings, and that is enough to make any writer great.
