There is a parlance in philosophy, "existence means significance". Directly using this parlance to explain the existence of translation variation is, seemingly, somewhat abstract. But from a general survey of the application of translation variation, which develops from contingency to consciousness, especially "selection translation" and "compilation variation", we can find the significance of translation variation more and more obvious. However, the study of translation variation has never been recognized by most theorists. It is still a young baby. Some claim translation variation is not translation at all, and some think its practicing is actually manifestation of the translator's utilitarianism. But since it is useful, why stop it from the threshold of study? However translation variation shall be academically studied since it has great value. This thesis, consulting Study of Translation Variation by Huang Zhonglian, explores the essence of translation first, and then demonstrates that translation variation accords with the essence of translation and thus belongs to translation. Throughout the thesis, "purpose" is a key word, which is what primarily differs translation variation from translation proper, and which explains in translation variation why to vary, what to be varied, and how to vary, and which helps explore the translation methods, its principles, types and its application. The thesis aims to pave the road for further study of translation variation and make better use of it.Accordingly, this thesis comprises the following parts.Introduction briefly introduces the present situation of the study of translation variation, and points out the basic theory and studying method. The first chapter discusses the essence of translation, explains whether translation variation belongs to translation or not, and draws a conclusion that translation is essentially considered as a purposeful bilingual activity. Its "purpose" mainly refers to the communication ofmessage. Translation variation accords with the essence of translation, belonging to translation in its broad sense. The second chapter mainly explores the connotation of translation variation. By compared with translation proper and writing, translation variation is identified in object of service, translation method and its principle, and it is not an arbitrary activity resulting from the translator's irresponsibility. The third chapter is mainly concerned with the classification of translation variation. The thesis firstly presents Huang's classification, pointing out its merits and demerits, and puts forwards an alternative classification, which is clearer and more standardized. The fourth chapter is mainly concerned with the necessity of translation variation and its application. The thesis analyses the main factors that make translation variation necessary in modern society, and presents its specific significance and the scope of application. The conclusion restates the importance and calls for the joint efforts from all researchers in translation in order to further standardize translation variation and make better use of translation variation in absorbing more messages more quickly in a larger amount from foreign texts.
