Considerable theoretic research has been done about shape and spirit of Chinese painting works, and rich academic achievements have been obtained by many researchers since ancient China. The variation, development and perfection of China painting arts has been fully discussed in this thesis. Among this research work, a new point of view that painting theory of shape and spirit experienced four periods of variation and development of emphasizing shape similarity, equilibrating of shape and spirit, emphasizing of shape and neglecting of spirit, and stressing of spirit and ignoring of shape has been presented. To research and develop this theory for teaching of painting work will be of instruction and indication meaning for the tendency of emphasizing shape and neglecting spirit, stressing skills, ignoring theory study in nowadays some painting and painting education areas.
