David Herbert Lawrence (1885-1930) was a well-known novelist, poet, and critic of the twentieth century in Britain. Though his life was short, he left people with a lot of works. His main works are as follows: White Peacock(1911), Sons and Lover(1913), The Rainbow(1915), Women in Love(1920), Lady Chatterley's Lover(1928). The theme of his works is to explore the ideal mode of sexual relationship, that is the harmony between body and mind.Based on Lady Chatterley 's Lover, this thesis analyses the characters in the novel, illustrating their heavy depression and psychological distortion under the civilization; the love between Connie and Mellors lets us see the struggling hope and beautiful prospects, and the hardship of pursuing love; then this paper talks about the present situation: people's stress, spiritual vain and psychological unbalance are almost the same with the description in the novel. Therefore people seek one way or many ways to relieve .themselves, generally speaking the release or indulgence of sexuality. But as a whole the indulgence of men is closely related with the oppression of women. Women's pursuit of for equality especially the sexual equality is rather difficult, for example, the sexual harassment, domestic violence in modern society; women should obtain their inalienable rights, so the pursuit of Connie in the novel is significant for modern women who are more obedient; in addition, in the pursuit ofequality and freedom, there are some problems in our society due to various influences, especially in developing countries, such as cohabitation, extramarital affairs, especially the sexual health problem, etc. Compared with developed countries, these problems would be got rid of theoretically and practically.Among his novels about love, Lady Chatterley's Lover is his climax, a masterpiece of his pursuit of the sexual harmony. This novel described in detail the severe depression and distortion of the people under the civilization, the hypocrisy and the selfishness of the capitalist marriage, and tried to solve it by harmonizing mind and body, human being and nature, thus perfected the humanity. Lady Chatterley-Connie tried to pursue happiness and love, which is significant for modern women. But the struggle of women's equality and freedom is hard and zigzag. Many people have tried for many years, but more and more people need to go on with the movement.The first chapter introduces the relation between the author's experience and the-theme of his works. The influences on his works are mainly from three aspects: the contradiction between his father and mother; his health problem and his wandering life. This made him love literature, have a strong sensitivity to women, have a special angle of view and sharp observing ability. He was romantic and bold. His wandering life provided him with a lot of literature materials. The themesof his works included harmonious love and sex; happy family; harmony between man and nature; his considerations on some other social problems. And he put forward his opinions characteristic of his personality.The second chapter talks about Lady Chatterley's Lover. All the characters in this novel were depressed heavily under the civilization, which made them distorted psychologically and physically. This is his theme: the devastation on humanity by the civilization, which made people lose humanity. On the contrary, Connie's pursuit of love and her harmonious relationship with Mellors made us see the hope of life. The restoration and perfection of humanity is the purpose of the author. This chapter illustrates the theme from two aspects: the first one is the distortion of humanity by the civilization, which would be analyzed through the following parts: the common people; the Lord Clifford Chatterley, the servant Mrs. Bolton, the artist Duncan and other nobles; Lady Chatterley-Connie; the wood keeper Mellors.
