Oppositing in the Chinese and classic literature that is long and radiant, and the contemporary literature filled with the variaty, The Chinese modern literatureses are apparently more and more "poor and unproductive", Particularly is for the one of the branches that among them the novel's research, is also such. The people of the past's research can almost be too many to ennumerate one by one. Despite among them not lack the speech of the wisdom, but still have a doubt, no a solution. That is, the modern novel in China be used as a special literature style, its special is what? The substance of this kind of special is what? Its meanings is what? This need trace back to the history's incipience: the "May 4th" period.Because the "May 4th" movement had produced the profound influence in Chinese culture ,so make the "May 4th" mean a period, its implication is very abundant. It are much more than only to point the year of 1919, and still including another two or three years before or after of 1919, namely, from five years that in 1917 until 1921. This period's novel, always has been neglected by deficiency in the quantity and the quality, so the novels in this period were known of "the problem novel" in the literary history by the past researchers. In fact, the《Renaissance》novels standed for the 1919's novels appeared the aesthetic characteristic different from the novels creating after the 《the Monthly of Novel》corrected in 1921. In the formality express for: the emotion factor characterized of "time" has gradually seeped into, then extended the short story's performance space, from make a point of the " to reappear" the realistic nature, gradually turn the direction to make a point of the " to express" mental state space; Moreover, because the "association" thought has been input, and it combined with the "imagination" thought, to produce the "Symbol" in China modern novel ,make the novel's contents deeper and enrich the China modern novel's performance function .This phenomenon can be rooted of the development of Chinese modern prose, so we can called the chinese modern novel "'Essayized'novel". "Essayized" is a kind of wide phenomenon of the chinese modern novel , in 1930's, some researchers have already choosed the angel of style, and put forward the idea of "essayized", but mostly researcher thought it only "Lyric novel" or "poetic novel". Untill nowdays, all researches only confine at describing, generalizing its characteristic, or comb to its developping grain, but expel the modern novel of the other style appearance at outside. But the modern prose includes some patterns, such as essay that always be uesd to comment, article ,prose, etc. these appearances, whether for comment or for lyric, have the same characteristic, that is, the association of thought is important in novel's construction. Then we can get the meanings of chinese modern novel's "essayized" thought pattern. Through analyzing the novel of《the Girlies' Biography in Shanghai》, and Luxun's novel, it can be concluded that "essayized" novel' thought pattern means, during writing novels draw lessons from the prose' thought pattern of "variable degree and association", to break the traditional novel conception, intensify the modern novel's expression's function. And it is a kand of modernistic thought pattern ,and it have modernity. So the thesis tries to reread the periodical of《The New Youth》,《Renaissance》, 《the Monthly of Novel》,《literature ten-day periodical》(《literature weekly paper》) published in "May 4th" period, to find out Chinese novels' developping clue, and I hope it can offer some experience for contemporary novel's research ,even for contemporary literature's reserch.
