This thesis discusses metaphor, a commonly used rhetorical device in English, and its translation into Chinese by exploring the definition, classification, application, and translation methods of English metaphors. The thesis explores the six definitions of metaphor from different sources, touches upon the significance of the topic, points out the research methods involved, and summarizes the content of the thesis. It also introduces the classification of English metaphors in two different ways, with some analysis of typical examples. Since metaphor is widely used in English language, the applications of metaphor are generalized and exemplified here. As to the metaphor translation into Chinese, its various aspects are covered, including translation methods. It is also pointed out in the thesis that the translation procedures introduced by Peter Newmark may find their places in the translation methods discussed here.It is hoped that the thesis will be helpful to English learners in China, contributing to their appreciation, application and translation of English metaphors.
