This paper, by means of the deep and systematical studies in the art of frescos in the Yongle palace (the Palace of Forever Happiness), is to tap and refine the connotation of science and the value of art of these frescos. My paper is composed of four parts, and they are as follows:The social and historical background of the formation of the frescos in Yongle Palace: In this part, 1 spelt out the basis of science and culture, technological process, architecture, and art on which the frescos in Yongle Palace came into being and the necessary social conditions under which they are formed. At the same time, I also expounded their historical origin along the track of the development of Chinese art of frescos.The ancient view of nature implied in the frescos in Yongle Palace: Given that philosophy is the soul of art, their formation were necessarily affected by all kinds of philosophical ideas then, of which the role played by the idea of the harmony and unity of heaven and human and the doctrine of Yin and Yang and the Five Elements is the most obvious and important and my focus as well in this part.The idea of science reflected in the frescos in Yongle Palace: The fresco in Yongle Palace not only is artistic creation but also implies rich contents of science. So, how to show the exquisite combination of art and science and how to reveal the idea of science in ancient frescos by artistic means are my concerns in this part.Technology used in frescos in Yongle Palace: Frescos in Yongle Palace, as a wonder of Chinese horticulture, is not only deeply affected by the ideas of philosophy and aesthetics but also restricted greatly by the technology used then. Therefore, 1, firstly, through the analysis of the techniques in drawing, meant to reveal the principles of technology such as the methods of perspective, scale and projection in the drawing process of frescos in Yongle Palace. Then 1 furthered my studies in the technological process, the frescos' paintings, the artistic treatment and the techniques in famille rose-dropping and gold-covering.In conclusion, the connotation of science and technology implied in the art of frescos in Yongle Palace was finally revealed through those above-mentioned analyses and studies.
