Li Bai, Du Fu and Su Shi are the most representative figures in ancient Chinese literature. Their special moral spirits represent three kinds of types of moral states of Chinese traditional culture to some extent. True man without terror, kind man without selfishness, and wise man without worry generalize characters of Li Bai, Du Fu and Su Shi. This paper tries to probe the traits of thoughts and ideal characters of writers and official leader of Tang and Song dynasties through the portrait of these three figures' characters. The whole paper consists three chapters.Chapter one talks about Li Bai's moral ideal. True man without terror generalizes the moral spirit of him. Centered with Li Bai's moral types of retreating after success, this chapter includes two sections. Section one talks about the source of Li Bai's moral character, ideal type of retreating after success, and independent moral impression. The second section states Li Bai's moral spirit's truth. Romance and conceit are true, and pursuing and depress are also true.The second chapter talks about Du Fu's moral ideal. Kind man without selfishness generalizes Du Fu's moral spirit. Du Fu is a loyal practician of Confucian morality. His most distinctive and most attractive and shocking character is his saint-like "kindness". There are also two sections. Section one expounds Du Fu's moral spirit from the angle of Confucian ideal characters. Extreme benevolence is moral ideal that Du Fu pursued for his whole life. Personal virtue and humanity are his longing for moral trait. The second section discusses Du Fu's unselfishness as a kind person. Passionate moral character and concerning about country and its people are, for Du Fu as a kind person, the best interpretation to Confucian virtue and holiness.The third chapter talks about Su Shi's moral ideal. Su Shi is a wise man who very keenly enjoys life. His personality extends fascination. There are three sections. Section one talks about Su's "He Tao Poems" which expresses his character dream in order to prove that Su Shi's simple and external life contains pure insights. Section two talks about his personality's state during his Huang Zhou period. His straightness, pessimism are the free realm after his total interpretation in this period. Section three talks about Su Shi's personal charm as a wise man. Independence, frankness, and extreme virtue are his sparkling part of his beauty in his personality.
