This thesis aims at analyzing the lexical characteristics of spoken English by comparing CEB4 vocabulary with the SBNCSC vocabulary, and by investigating the distribution of the SBNCSC vocabulary's word length, word origins, personal pronouns, fillers, slang, interjections, contractions and abbreviations, offensive words, and so on. The thesis picked out the SBNCSC-only vocabulary, the shared words between CEB4 vocabulary and SBNCSC vocabulary, CEB4-only vocabulary, and examined their characteristics. After a systematic research, the following conclusions are drawn: firstly, the CEB 4 vocabulary cannot cover the SBNCSC vocabulary, and the shared words are core vocabulary that is a foundation of both spoken English and written English. Secondly, the CEB4-only vocabulary is seldom used in daily conversations due to its written style, lexical difficulty, and lexical complexity.Based on the research, a tentative supplementary word list is offered for college oral English teaching for non-English majors.
