Lakoff and Johnson have outlined the metaphorical mappings in the conceptual domains of life and death for English. With the aim to verify the metaphorical structure of the aforementioned domains in Chinese and tested their universal applicability, this thesis conducted the analysis within the framework of the conceptual metaphor theory. The analysis displayed a rather high degree of similarity between English and Chinese in terms of metaphorical mappings for these domains. However, at more detailed aspects of the source domain structure we could still find cross-linguistic difference in the two languages.
