"Picture World in shanghai" is the last artist center in modem times. In the period about fifty and sixty years from the Guangxu and Xuantong times to in the Republic of China, Shanghai has attracted groups and groups of artists from the world and its prosperity of painting and pictures has far exceeded the past Yangzhou, a place famous for its painting and picture. The prosperous development of "Picture World above the Sea" is certainly associated with the cases such as the social turmoil, the city's economical flourishinga and so on, but the main reason, for me, is from the folk supporting force to support the artists and their artistical activity. In the early china, the assistance from the government is the major force helping the development of art. Since the Yuan Dynasty, the situation has changed. The folk assisting force begins to thrive and near to take place of palace to push on the artist cause by the end of Qing Dynasty. This Dissertation will give a detail analysis of how the trader classes, art colleges and schools, publishing trades, picture traders and other folk assisting forces have assisted the artists rushing into Shanghai, and helped them to create a sound existing environment and developing space so as to push on the prosperity of art cause in Shanghai. Since the thriving of the folk assistance is based on the economy, the paper will make the discussion on the prosperous economy of Shanghai as a single chapter, and attached to it is a subsidiary exposition of the beginning of the folk support.
