Yu Si is the first journal on creation of prose in the history of modern literature of China. This journal created a consciousness on the style of prose for the first time in the fields of creation of literature and critical literature and made some contribution to the revolution of ideology and the enlightenment of literature. Zhou Zuoren is the editor and leading copywriter of Yu Si, he contributed a lot to the development of the journal. However, during the period of publishing of the journal, Zhou Zuoren's ideology tended to contradiction and confusion, which influenced the content of the journal negatively. This thesis attempts to take apart the relationship between Zhou Zuoren and Yu Si, the effect Zhou Zuoren had on Yu Si, and the value and significance of Yu Si in the history of literature after the author studied works of Zhou Zuoren and Yu Si again and again.This thesis is divided into six chapters mainly, as following: Introduction. The author introduced the value and significance of Yu Si in the history of literature and the contribution Zhou Zuoren had made to the journal.I. The feature of coterie journals-"being congenial to each other". The author established Zhou Zuoren's kernel status from the perspective of features of Yu Si. Zhou Zuoren originated Yu Si actively and therefore is listed on the top of sixteen copywriters, and is the editor as a matter of fact; he invited congenial friends to contribute to the journal fervidly. With the endeavor of Zhou Zuoren, a comparatively united literary party came into being soon in which people shared the same inclination.II. Enlightenment promoted literature. In this chapter, the author starts with the literaryidea of civilian in the period of the May 4th Movement, and then points out the tenet of the origination of Yu Si is to promote literature by enlightenment. After the May 4th movement, although Zhou's literary opinion and the tendency of ideology had changed, his enlightenment opinion and enthusiasm to establish a new "national literature" had not reduced. Under the influence of Zhou Zuoren, Yu Si has three main features: a) emphasize the construction of writer's main body spirit and his/her power of personality; b) pay attention to the value and significance of reader in the prevalence of literature as the object of enlightenment; c) having a wide content and tolerant thought, thinks much of abundance and interest as well as information andideology.III. A garden plot of writers. Yu Si turned into a garden plot of writers at that time, it's main form of literary creation is prose. Essay and exquisite prose are the two main forms of articles in Yu Si. Their highest achievements are represented by Lu Xun and Zhou Zuoren respectively. The author thinks that Zhou Zuoren promoted the development of modern prose by setting a column for essays and his own theories and creation of proses.IV. The style of Yu Si: popular and sincere. Under the endeavor of the writers of Yu Si, including Zhou Zuoren, a special style of Yu Si came into being, which represents the highest value of art of modem prose and symbolizes a new stage of creation of prose after the May 4th movement. In this thesis, the author points out the three main features of Yu Si: a) a modem sprit ?freedom; b) a style of art ?satire and humor; c) the form of literature ?changeable.V. Against all arbitrary and beggary acts. After integrating Zhou Zuoren's ideological characteristics with the militancy of Yu Si, the author points out that Zhou Zuoren's critical literary activities are all based on his original humanitarianism, under the influence of Lu Xun, he had not lost all of his characteristics as a warrior of revolution of ideology. However, this cannot prevent him from the infatuation to learning.VI. Turnaround and declination. In this chapter, the author analyzes inside and outside reasons of the declination of Yu Si.
