A 3-map Model In Translation Process

In this paper, a 3-map model is presented, with the enlightenment from American translation researcher James Holmes' 2-map model. The paper tries to adopt in translation study some basic prepositions of schema theory on the cognitive psychology and behavior and some points in cognitive linguistics.In the model, I illustrate that in the translation process, there are three existing schemata: the author's schema (MA), the translator's schema (MT), and the target language text readers' schema (MR). The MT must include MA' and MR'(the MA and MR predicted by the translator with variant materials, which is just to some extent similar to the real MA and MR), which is the necessary precondition of a satisfactory translation with great fidelity. The translator can utilize such a MT to help the target language readers set up the necessary schema about the source language and source language culture and improve it. The effective understanding and communication between two cultures can be approached.The model is helpful in explaining some long existing problems in translation and translating study. What discussed later are the translation units, the information quantity in translating, and the automatization of translators' behavior in translation process.
