Deformation is a general artistic rule. It is the essence of artistic deformation that subject consciousness purposely processes objects so as to make them possess a sharp subjective flavor and reflect the individuality of a writer's writing.Chuang-Tzu is the first master on deformation art in ancient Chinese literature and reaches very high artistic attainments, which are notably showed in multitudinous artistic figures created by him, especially those deformed figures which turn the abstract philosophy into the concrete living scene and embody Tao, those sacred and solemn historical people who are kneaded and molded by the writer at will, and those supermen endowed with the writer's ideal. Those figures fully manifest the most marked characteristic of deformation art, i.e. their weirdness and oddness. The creation of deformation art of the book of Chuang-Tzu has something to do with the then social environment and literary situation as well as the writer's unique way of thinking and his outlook on literature and art.The way of thinking of Chuang-Tzu is totally different from other thinkers before Qin Dynasty. It not only emerges from the womb of primitive mythical thinking, but also draws abundant nourishment ofrationality in the then civilized age, and organically mixes cognitive action and aesthetic action thereby smelting a kind of unique way of thinking which is a catalyst engendering deformation art.Chuang-Tzu's life ideal about pursuing absolute mental liberty decides that his attitude towards writing is "regarding writing as a game". It is this "play game spirit" that impels him to break with convention, and seek for novelty, then favor deformation art. Moreover, as a talented poet, Chuang-Tzu's abundant artistic feelings, extraordinary imagination, acute artistic sense and superb language skill, all influence the creation of his deformation art deeply.Chuang-Tzu's deformation art has far an effect on Chinese literature. Whether in writing prose or in creating fiction or in producing poem, many writers or poets in various dynasties all consciously drew experience from Chuang-Tzu's deformation art, with the result that there have been large quantities of excellent literary works.
