The following text is a comparative expatiation on two classical love images of "back garden" and "balcony" in Chinese and western dramas. The main body of this version includes four chapters, except for the introduction .The first chapter discusses the connotation of "image" which is the base point of the whole thesis. This part recites primary definitions of "image" in history of western aesthetics and literary theory of Ancient China. The image used in this text embodies both the standard position of Chinese traditional culture and the soul of Chinese and western aesthetics. This part analyses the connotation of Aesthetische Idee which has three lays in succession. Finally, this chapter puts emphasis on particularity of dramatic image.The second chapter discusses the image of "back garden" in Chinese classical drama. This part dissertates the image of "back garden" on its connotation and generation. Its connotation includes the implication of things themselves together with hominine spirit and feelings. The image of "back garden" is a bevy of images composed of moon, flower, tree, low wall and door . Our analysis commences with these things. Hominine spirit and feelings include three aspects. The generation includes four aspects: literary inheritance; the influence of life and the restriction of era; the influence of traditional culture; the accumulation of drama itself.The third chapter discourses upon the image of "balcony". This part dissertates the image of "balcony" on its connotation and generation. Its connotation includes the implication of balcony itself, the ambience and hominine spirit and feelings. Balcony itself is pinnacled which opens wide. The ambience is generally garden and street. Hominine spirit and feelings include three aspects: the pursuit of aesthetic ideality of love; the vital illuminative implication that heroines impart to heroes; the eulogization for love and liberty. Its generation includes three factors: the chivalric romance in Europe; the influence of era and the development of architecture; the creation of genius.The last chapter tries to compare the two images for new meanings. The open"balcony" and the secret "back garden" correspond to distinct culture. There is also "balcony" in Chinese literature and "garden" in western one. Back garden and balcony are architectures which are the outcome of civilization . The two images have similar metaphor of culture. The mise en scene for images are generally present and performance. This paper discusses the mise en scene for the two images historically.
