This thesis discusses the grammatical metaphor in the framework of systemic-functional grammar, which is employed to analyze and unpack VOA and CRI news discourse. As the study on grammatical metaphor from systemic-functional approach is initiated by M.A.K.Halliady, the thesis expounds Halliday's grammatical theory based on the comparative analysis of lexical metaphor and grammatical metaphor and the elucidation of the term of "congruent" as well. Other scholars' contributions to grammatical metaphor theory are introduced in the thesis. News discourse is selected as my focus of study. 15 pieces of news reported at integral point of each hour on VOA and CRI are chosen respectively. In the course of data analysis, the approach is both quantitative and qualitative. Based on the theory and approach elucidated in Chapter 2, the linguistic characteristic of grammatical metaphor in news discourse is demonstrated and specific grammatical metaphors are found. Therefore, the superficial features of neutrality, objectivity and impartiality of news discourse are realized in this way without consciousness of the audience. The analysis in this thesis demonstrates that abundant grammatical metaphors do exist in news discourse. They mainly occur in the form of ideational metaphor at the level in configuration of transitivity functions and in sequence of group-phrase classes realized by the work of nominalization. Nominalization is the main source of grammatical metaphor in news discourse as it is in scientific discourse. With the length limit of this thesis and the complexity of grammatical metaphor theory itself, I cannot include every aspect of grammatical metaphor in this thesis. What the thesis aims to do is to detect the linguistic features of news discourse and uncover the myth of it so as to facilitate audiences' understanding of news discourse and shed some light on journalists' work for news reports.
