This dissertation is concerned with the temporality in Chinese, especially that inMordern standard Chinese .the temporality mentioned here consists of the variousgrammatical meanings conveyed by some vocabulary elements and grammatical elements.Temporality is the representation of the external temporal structure of events. The papertries to prove that the temporality is a semantic category in Chinese by the duction andduduction. The paper presupposed the theories of B.Comrie(1976)and B.Comrie(1985). In chapter One, the paper studies the chief problems of temporality , it is argued that thetemporality is not concerned with the verb but sentence. The absolute tense and the relativetense are all exist in Chinese, which is argued that it has its typological significance. Theabsolute tense consists of present,past and future, which has the basis of psychology. Theabundant meanings of temporality are conveyed by some vocabulary elements andgrammatical elements. In chapter Two ,the paper tries to prove that the temporality in notowe to the grammatical category of narrow sense but the semantic category. In chapter Three, the paper analyze the typology of temporality and the classify oftemporality in Chinese .It is argued that the temporality in Chinese has three parameters :ET,RT and ST, so the nine typologies of temporality composed of the absolute tense andrelative tense can express the relative positions of ET,RT and ST in time shaft. The chapterFour analyze various grammatical meanings of temporality, which expressed by some typicalgrammatical forms. In chapter five ,the paper discuss the relation of temporality and aspectin Chinese. In chapter Six ,the paper analyze the inner difference of the temporalitical systemin Chinese and the temporalitical system in English from the Cognitive point. The lastchapter is the summarize of the paper.
