Since the Third Plenary Session of the 11th Party Central Committee, China has gained a remarkable success by carrying out policies of reform and opening to the outside world for about 20 years, for instance the per capita GDP has been above $1000. We have chosen to participate the world competition actively and enter the WTO aspiringly, all of which are for purpose of early accomplishment of modernization and the Chinese nation's great renaissance. As the tidal wave of economic globalization is surging greatly and China has been standing in the center ineluctably, to meet these situations China has established the aim of economic system reform of socialist market and gradually clarified the aim mode for the socialism reform. All has indicated that China is gradually melted into the international mainstream society, and they are also signs of the enhancement of modern consciousness in Chinese society and the change of Chinese people's ideas for the modernity which is melting into their lives.Economic globalization is altering humankind's block-off, guard, parochialism, prejudice and short-sightedness resulting from the national, interlocal and historical limits. Thus, in this process, promoting the material cultural and personnel exchanges between different countries in the world and increasing mutual comprehension, trust and coordinationhave been the main significant trend. Besides the optimal collocation of various productive factors and resources in the world wide scope, the ultimate thing is to change the "man", that means, from the internal to the external, from the material to the spiritual, making Chinese people live a modern life, wear a modern citizen's consciousness, value and manner of behaviors instead of dominated by the dissevered or mangled life style and world view. While still in the process of our nation's entering the well-to-do society and social transformation, how to promote the modernization of our nation means more. And how to deal with the relationship between Chinese culture and western culture relates to the issue of how to get accustomed to the modernization and globalization for the Chinese people. Globalization is a period of the process of modernization, and what is more, a new period. Accordingly, we should not only scan the future in the historical angle, but also have to overlook the history in a futural angle. Only on the basis of well understanding the essence of the modernization and the trend of the humanitarian development, we can go closer to victory by knowing ourselves clearly. This thesis is firstly handled with the theory of modernization, among which the "mechanical union" theory by E ? Durkleim (1858-1971), the "community and society" theory by Ferdinand Tonnies (1855-1936) and Max ? Webber's "reason" theory are included. Basing on thesescholars' theories, I abstract the essence and trend of the modernization. Secondly I use the logic-historic and comparative methods to explain how the Eastern and Western can and cannot give birth to modernization. Finally, by orientationally researching the modernization in the Eastern and Western cultures, I get my conclusion that Chinese modernization will be a long historical process with complexities and pains, no matter what it is—a social transformation or a renewed scan for tradition.
