Modern graphic design means more than design; it actually concerns cultural recreation. A nation's design culture is closely related with its cultural history, national characteristics, social ideas and mode of thinking etc. We can't shut our eyes to our traditional culture and imitate and accept the design of western nations completely;we should be active in creating graphic design of Chinese characteristics. We should try to reproduce the thinking advantages and special elegant style of Chinese traditional culture which other nations do not possess, while at the same time paying respect to the specialty of national art. "When we make use of tradition, it does not mean that we should revive the old customs passively". This is an age of cultural interactions, exchanges and fusion. In graphic design, we should combine traditional culture with modern design idea and create design works filled with Chinese cultural implications through the "reproduction" of the elements of calligraphy and painting. Only in liberal interactive spirit can the art of design develop;"interaction" means respecting cultural diversity and traditions, cherishing creativity and facing the future with an open mind. This paper tries to make a study of the application of traditional visionary art elements of Chinese calligraphy and painting in graphic design, discusses how elements of calligraphy and painting are merged in graphic design, summarizes the important role which elements of calligraphy and painting play in graphic design, and finally puts forward the idea that we should reconsider and reuse elements of calligraphy and painting and the method these elements are combined more closely with modern graphic design. It hopes to bring something new to modern graphic design.
