Research On The Mechanism Of Attention Blink

Attention is a vital condition not only for individual information processing and various cognitive activity, but also for completion all sorts of behaviors. Only being attention, people can supervise their own movement and behavior to avoid making mistakes and finish the corresponding task to achieve their aims. The research on attention before is more focused on attention deployed over space, the most update trend is Attention blink, which is more emphasized on attention deployed over time. T-he research on AB play a key role in discovering the nature of attention, understanding the phenomenon of human psychology, comprehending the essence of consciousness, enhanceing the efficiency of man-machine system.Based on the previous research, at 1992 Raymond and his group study further on post target processing deficit by experiment, and coin a new word, Attentional Blink, to describe the phenomenon post target processing deficit. The research of AB is mainly used the paradigm, known as Rapid Serial Visual Presentation(RSVP), stimuli are presented sequentially in the same position,and subjects are asked to identify or detect specific stimulus. The AB phenomena means, when two targets,T1 and T2, are to be reported, T1 is identified almost perfectly, but the ability of identifying T2 is impaired, which appear in 500ms after T1.In recent ten years, researcher go deep into the mechanism of AB generation. According to masking object and function, the research of relationship between AB and masking can be divided three phased, Un-masking phase, masking phase, and beyond masking. The first phase is from 1992 to 1996,called Unmasking phase. The general conclusion of researchers is: T1+1(the next stimulus after T1) decide the generation of AB and regulate the scale of AB. The second phase is from 1996 to 2003, called masking phase. Research treated T1+1 and T2+1 as masking of T1 and T2 separately and begin to investigate the effect on T2 caused by T2+1. their general conclusion is: The AB occurs on the premise of masking after T1 & T2 and deferred masking after T2. The third phase is from 2003 until now, called beyond masking phase. Researchers begin to doubt the theory of masking and find that AB occurs without masking of T1 & T2 in certain condition.This paper probe into the mechanism of AB's generation.
