English is a true global language and many people are strongly motivated to learn it, becausefluent use of it can enable us to find fresh opportunities for international cooperation. With thedeepening of the reform and opening-up as well as China's entry into WTO, there is an increasingdemand of human resources who are capable of using English proficiently.Though a great number of Chinese people are learning English, few of them cancommunicate appropriately either orally or in written form, even at the level of college oruniversity. The failure is believed to result mainly from two factors, English teaching methods andEnglish learning strategies. In this study, however, the main focus is on English learners'learningstrategies.In the past two decades, studies domestically and abroad on English learning strategies werebrought forward and many publications were displayed in bookstores. However, most of thelearning strategies have their limitations to certain degree in helping learners master English.Therefore, further study on English learning strategies is still the first and key academic issue forlinguists and language teachers.From the author's point of view, we should be fully aware of the significance of the researchon and the application of English learning strategies in that it is in conformity with the educationalphilosophy —needs of human beings are of primary consideration. As far as English learning isconcerned, learners should be centered and thus their personality, interest, motivation, attitude andcognitive style are to be taken into account. It is true that this tendency has been reflected from theprevious research, but few of them involve the empirical analysis of the combination of languagelearning and learners'psychology, not to mention the fostering of learning interest with thefacilitation of language rhythm.Based on the reasons mentioned above, in order to improve the effect of English learning(more specifically, learners'listening, speaking, reading, and writing competences), the authorputs forward his own English learning strategy —MRLS (Music-Rhythm Learning Strategy),which is a new English learning strategy discovered by the author himself based on the languageorigin and function theory —"language has its poetic function and it is esthetical itself"and theavailable studies of learning strategies carried out by language teachers and linguists domesticallyand abroad. The strategy aims at enhancing English learners'interest; strengthening Englishlearners'motivation so as to improve their learning effect.
