During the period of 1970s and 1980s, Mr.Wu Yannan ,whofirstly held the positive attitude toward anarchism and nihilism in lateperiod of Qing Dynasty, considers that thoughts of anarchism "hasplayed a positive as well as negative role, while the positive one is themain aspect". The members of quintessence of Chinese culture aremostly the propagator of thoughts of nation and democracy, whoseactivities in the first few years in the Revolution of 1911 should berecommended".His study broke through the traditional view that theanarchism and the quintessence of Chinese culture was totallynegative .Then together with Mr.Feng Zuyi and Mr.Su Zhongli ,heedited Social Thoughts in Late Period of Qing Dynasty. the first work,which studies systematically social thoughts at that time .The workchooses social thoughts as the subject , puts individuals into groups toresearch macrocosmically and presents a series of new ideas, such asreform, drawing up a constitution and saving the country by the way ofbuilding industries, etc. At the end of 1990s, Mr.Wu, together withFeng Zuyi ,Su Zhongli ,Guo Hanming edited and published ModernSocial Thoughts in China ,which reflects generally modern socialthoughts in China, elongates time period, expands contents. Thecharacteristics, special ideas of the definition and standard of socialmodern social thoughts in China are also generalized and described inthe book. The research results explore the inevitable regularity of thedevelopment of modern social thoughts from a broad respective; exhibitgrand social historic spectacle of modern China and hard times whichChina experienced during the last hundreds of years from a point ofmultilevel and multiaspect; reflect features of cultural conflicts andfusion in China and other countries in ancient and modern times. All ofthese can guide us to distinguish correctly our specific nationalconditions from that of the past, to realize deeply that socialism is thenecessary choice of China .The book so far has become "the longest,the biggest monograph in size to study modern social thoughtssystematically", and has established the leading position of Mr.Wu inthis field .His success is closely related to his charm as a scholar. As ahistorian, his rich knowledge and strong responsibility impose him todo further research. His positive attitudes to fuse himself into academicstudy and his enthusiasm to help young talented researchers benefitlater generations most.
