With the development of technology, the frequency of international contacts and the formation of multi-element cultural structure in recent decades, it is required to master one or more languages other than the mother tongue. Therefore, the characterizations of bilingualism have become the issues, which are focused on in circles of linguistics, psychology and pedagogy. From the aspects of cognitive psychology and cognitive neurology, the effects that semanteme produces in bilingual characterizations are initially expounded in this article. By means of the analysis made on the varieties of and the acquiring channels for bilingualism is emphasized the abstractness of semantic characterizations and dynamic analysis made on bilingual features so as to keep bilingual interpretation smooth and fluent. Part 1 Psychological Functions of Semanteme In this article, it is, from the aspect of the psychological function of semanteme, emphatically stressed that semanteme is the abstract entity of linguistic characterization and the issue is probed into whether independent or identical characterization the semantemes of the bilingual's two languages are respectively. Those scholars holding the view of "independent characterization" think that linguistic form and semanteme are two parts inseparable. The information of a term should be characterized as a whole. The meaning conveyed linguistically embodies not only knowledge and experience but also different cultural background. Thus, language has many spheres unavailable for interpretation. For a bilingual, different cultural background or information carried by different language leads to different space for psychological storage. On the other hand, those scholars holding the view of "identity" consider that semanteme refers to the meaning can be conveyed by language. Although differences of grammars or sentence patterns may probably exist in bilingualism, it may not be thought that there is semantic difference between two languages. Semanteme has no differences caused from different languages. Linguistic interpretation availableness can be realized just by means of such a super-linguistic feature of semanteme, which is also the theoretical base for bilingual interpretation. Since linguistic morphologies can be, on a level, integrated into abstract semantic entities, it is reasonably held that different languages have identical semantic characterization. Part 2 Classification, Storing Ways & Acquiring Channels of Bilingualism Different researchers, in accordance with different aims for their research, adopt different standards for bilingual classifications, in which more influential ones are coordinate vs. compound bilingualism, simultaneous vs. successive bilingualism and balanced vs. unbalanced bilingualism. By making a thorough study on the-storing ways of bilingualism through repeated practice, scholars advance three hypotheses for linguistic information storage, in which both common storage and individual storage have been supported with the conclusions drawn from some practices, which may be related to the channels for bilinguals' study whereas the hypothesis of multiple code, i.e. multiple storage, is advanced afterwards. Different channels and methods may be adopted as per specific situation upon learning and acquiring the second language may have different approaches and methods. For compounds bilinguals, the acquiring period follows the linguistic period and the acquiring channels embody learning and schooling mainly. And for coordinate bilinguals, the acquiring period goes with the linguistic period and the acquiring channels are family education and early-stage education. Part 3 Relationship between Bilingualism and Cognitive Development The effects of bilingual interpretation depend much on the bilingual's achievements in the aspect of cognitive development. The positive functions of bilingualism may be related to the efforts required for understanding and producing the second language.
