Reading comprehension is a dynamic communication between the writerand the reader. Texts, as the medium of the communication, are produced incertain context. In the process of comprehending a text, the reader needs todecode words and sentences in the text. What is more important, he needs toconstruct the context of the text with the language used by the writer and hisown background knowledge. In other words, reading comprehension is also anactive process of communication between the text and the reader's backgroundknowledge. Whether reading comprehension is successful depends on whetherthe reader can construct the context instead of whether he understands everyword or sentence in the text.This thesis studies the teaching strategies of context-based reading and isorganized in five chapters:In chapter one the author makes clear the purpose of writing the thesis.Through observation, the author found that teachers paid most of theirattention to the teaching of vocabulary and structure. As CET 4 & 6 shift theirtesting focus, the present teaching of reading shows weakness in improvingstudents'reading ability. The purpose of writing this thesis is just to find a newperspective to view the teaching of college English reading.In chapter two the author reviews the nature of reading comprehension,reading models, schema theory, definition and classification of context and theeffective use of context.
