The contemporary essays become prosperous from the desolate state, and bring about the focus in essay field known for the distinctive mental symbols. Now the current prose critics prefer to focus on the case analysis, but lack of macro study, condemned to surface analysis such as poetic imagery and inspiration. This paper, through the point of vital signs, using the relative theories such as life-aesthetics and theory that man is integral part of nature, selecting famous Essayists Jia Ping-ao, Zhou Tao and Liu Yu-liang, analyzes the western essays thoroughly, in order to vividly grasp the mental appreciation and thoughtful connotation. This paper consists of four parts: The first part mainly analyzes, through the points of vital experience and vital creation, the intrinsic instigators of vital signs in western essays, establishes the standpoints of western essay study basing on vital characteristics. Firstly, western essayists, living on the western regions of China, experiences the facts of life and reality bites, and thoroughly embraces, receives and realizes each detail of life, take shape the unique vital thought and appreciation. Secondly, western essayists, basing on the distinctive life-appreciation, display their thoughts and emotion through the form of imagery, atmosphere and figure. So "vitality"becomes the core of western essays, and forms the vital characteristics. The second part mainly analyzes the vital characteristics of western essays though the view of nature: Firstly, this paper, using the form of natural vital imagery, analyzes the focus and apprehension of nature glorified by western essayists. Zhou tao chooses wilderness, landscape, raptor and horse etc; liu Liang-cheng chooses ants, dogs and donkeys etc; Jia Ping-wa chooses bright moon and rocks etc; they expresses vivacity and vitality of these imageries, and display the vital characteristics. Secondly, western essayists believe in the view of nature, focus on and respect the lives in nature with humanity, realize the true essence of life in the state that man is integral part of nature. The third part analyzes, using related theories of vital philosophy, the appreciation of human life in western essays and reveals the mystery of life. Firstly, facing with people's depressed state, western essayists describe the robust characters of western people and try to look for the platonic state of life.
