Interpretation On Creative Treason In Literary Translation

The present study on creative treason is generally conducted from the perspectives of Comparative Literature and Comparative Culture, which mainly emphasizes the treasonous phenomenon in the translated text that reflects communication, interaction, influence and spread between different literatures and cultures. Nevertheless, such study is too broad to interpret specifically how and why creative treason is performed along with what its constraints are in the process of translation. Directed by the Cultural Translation Theory, therefore, the author of this thesis attempts to analyze the activity of creative treason in literary translation specifically from the angles of language and culture, hoping that this tentative study will somewhat serve the purpose to direct the manipulation of translation practice.By shifting the focus from treasonous phenomenon to creative activity, the author first reinterprets creative treason as a translating activity. In the light of this interpretation, the author further analyzes the Subject, Object, and performance of creative treason as well as its reason and constraints from the perspective of philosophy systematically. In her viewpoint, the translator, the target reader and the original author construct the Subjects of creative treason together. The difference lies in that the translator is the apparent Subject to perform this activity while the target reader and originai author are potential Subjects to motivate it. Being the most important and critical link in creative treason, the employment of adaptation determines whether a translated text could serve the translator's specific goals and the degree of creative treason in literary translation as well. Besides, the manipulation of creative treason is constrained by textual and extratextual factors.According to the foregoing analysis, the author draws a conclusion that creative treason, by nature, is a translating activity in which the translator employs specific means of adaptation to compromise between the original text and the target reader and between the source/target languages and cultures aswell. The performance of creative treason will end in both linguistic and cultural hybridity in the translated text.
