Since the middle 1980's, market has been becoming the dominant power that leads China's economic and cultural development with the transferring of national political and cultural center from superstructure to economic foundation. Consequently, Literature, as one part of superstructure, has undergone profound changes during China's social and cultural space. Thus, literature is getting farer and farer away from political ideology and becoming closer and closer to economic foundation. The consuming society which steadily arises upon the flourishing economic foundation ,also makes ultimate changes to former literary relations: from the main body of writers— producing to the main body of readers— consuming. As a result, during 1980's the literature visage shows many different trends which firstly emerge in prose field with a direct result of Prevalence of Prose. During this thesis Prevalence of Prose, as one of the early literary phenomena that are promoted by market consciousness, is systematically analyzed from such aspects as producing, publishing and circulating, and reception and consumption, etc. The cultural status of Prevalence of Prose under marketization gives us some illumination as to understand the changing literary relations since the middle of 20th century and to handle correctly the relationship between literature and ideology or market.
