| The thesis is a research of a literature case of Shuyuan Qiu who lived in the Chinese society of Singapore in the late 19th century and early 20th century. A great number of quoted passages in the thesis were found overseas. They are used in detailed parse and textual research. There are four parts. The first is about Shuyuan Qiu's identities in the three representative periods of his life, a Chinese businessman who traveled lots of places, a Chinese Confucian scholar who had a dream to make Singapore become civilized in traditionally Chinese way, an excellent man who had done much but only was remembered as a poet. The second part is about his achievements in making Singapore civilized in traditionally Chinese way. He organized Chinese literature associations, created newspaper offices, contributed to Chinese schools and tried to amalgamate Chinese traditional literature and Singaporean native language and culture. In the last two parts, we analyze three extrinsic characteristics and four intrinsic connotations of the literature case of Shuyuan Qiu. |
