This thesis focuses on D.H.Lawrence's view of nature in his novels. Lawrence is famous for his advocacy of nature as a way to resist industrial civilization. But his views of nature are not fixed. In fact, nature in his works undergoes a spiral progress: nature asthe life power but a cruel place (The White Peacock) → nature as the life power(Sons and Lovers)→ nature as the life power and the innovation power (TheRainbow) → nature as the life power occasionally but the emblem of destructivenessin general (Women in Love) →nature as the life power and the innovationpower(Lady Chatterley ' s Lover). Nature as the life power refers to the inward power to draw people to nature. It soothes and calms people, infuses people with life and merges with people. The innovation power refers to the outward power to drive people to explore the world outside nature. It encourages people to look for a practical way for the problem in the society.Lawrence's view of nature is influenced by many factors, such as the natural environment in which he was born, modern science and philosophy (the theory of Darwin and Nietzsche), his hatred for war and the blows in his personal life. In the end, however, he rediscovers the charm of nature. Following the call of nature, he regards nature as the life power and the innovation power again.Lawrence's view of nature changes in a spiral. The negative process is a spiral. In Women in love, nature is more negative than that in The White Peacock. The general tone of nature in Women in love is glum and gloomy and it kills the hero (Gerald) and two other minor people (Diana and doctor Brindell). While the general tone of nature in The White Peacock is neutral (negative aspect and positive aspect are all square) and nature kills only a minor person (Annable). The positive process experiences a spiral as well. In Lady Chatterley' s Lover, nature is endowed with the political implications as the way to solve social problems owing to his failure in his attempts at political ways to solve social problems afterLawrence writes his novel Women in Love. Compared with nature as the life power and the innovation power without any political implications in The Rainbow, nature in LadyChatterley ' s Lover is not the simple return. Instead, it is progress. In the progress, the innovation power of nature is worth noticing, because it breaksthe traditional concept that Lawrence is a passive writer who thinks the only function of nature is the life power (the power to sooth and calm people), and who wants people to return to the past world to live in the peaceful and beautiful nature.
