In foreign language learning class, the teaching of reading is supposed to be the most important content. The importance of reading has been acknowledged widely. It is well known that students learn English and gain information mainly from the written language. And reading provides the most efficient and the most important channel of linguistic input. It develops the students' linguistic competence and cultivate their communicative competence.However, in high vocational colleges, the traditional teaching of reading focuses on the words and grammars, which neglects the role of discourse analysis. This way of teaching makes students get limited linguistic competence. And with the introduction and application of discourse analysis theory and schema theory, the teaching of reading in high vocational college has been gained a strong support in theory.This thesis consists of five parts.Part One gives us a brief introduction of the purpose and significance for writing the thesis.Part Two elaborates the reading theories which include the nature of reading ,the levels of comprehension, three models of reading, schema theory and discourse analysis theory.Part Three shows us the teaching model bases on the discourse analysis. It also gives us an example for its practical application in the teaching of reading in high vocational colleges.Part Four illustrates the teaching experiment on discourse analysis method, verifying if the method is practical and how it promotes the teaching of reading.Part Five is the conclusion: discourse analysis method is effective and important in teaching of reading.
