Discussion On "Feng Gu"

"Feng Gu"is an important category in Chinese classical esthetics. Not only has the very strong theory value, but also is a modern significance esthetics category. Regarding the understanding of "Feng Gu", the academic circles has wide divided opinions. There have not a unified viewpoint of the meaning of "Feng Gu" till today. By searching the meaning of "Feng Gu" from the results of all previous dynasties scholar s research, this article searched the trace of "Feng Gu" and how it develop from "Feng", "Gu "to "Feng Gu". This article explained the esthetic connotation of'Feng Gu"by the thought pattern of the early time India Buddhism.The first part is the introduction of "Feng Gu" s development. "Feng Gu" has two independent concepts: "Feng"and"Gu", they become a category gradually in their development. "Feng Gu" emerges from the traditional fatalism;develops from appraising people s character in the Hanwei dynasty;forms in Liu Yiqing s ?Shi Shuo Xin Yu?;establishes in Liu Xie s ?The Literary Heart and Carving of Dragons?. After then, it became an important category in Chinese calligraphy and drawing theory.The second part has discussed the essence of "Feng Gu". The essence of "Feng Gu" is "the gas". The Chinese tradition thinking mode is a integrity thinking mode, under this kind of thinking pattern, some esthetics category such as Feng Gu, Ying Xiu, Sheng Si and so oh, which have the character of integrity and dim and not be dissolved by abstract thinking. The three divided thought pattern of Indian Buddhism agree with the thought pattern of ancient China. The author is attempting to discuss the esthetic connotation of "Feng Gu" by the Indian Buddhism's thoughts pattern.The third part has analyzed the esthetics of "Feng Gu". "Gu" means the strength life and includes the meaning of exuberant vitality. "Feng" used to descript one kind of beauty life. "Feng Gu" formed a category from two independent concepts. According to the Gestalt psychology the viewpoint: "the whole is bigger than sum of the part" .The meaning of "Feng Gu" has both connotation of "Feng" and "Gu" and surpass that two. Its new connotation is: infinite esthetic meaning lies in the limited space and time.The esthetics of "Feng" expressed a beauty of life. The esthetics of "Gu" embodied a powerful beauty of life and a vigorous form of life. "Feng" is used to express some emotion;"Gu" is used to refine language. According to the Indian Buddhism's thoughts pattern, to understanding the esthetic connotation of "Feng Gu" should not rigid in any side of "Feng", "Gu" or "Feng Gu" and understand it from the whole. From appreciating the beauty of "Feng Gu" to comprehending the beauty lies in the life, we willcomprehend the life spirit of the Chinese art — As one of the universe, we must agree the universal life with self- life and join the universal life.The forth part is the conclusion of the way of appreciating the beauty of "Feng Gu".As an esthetics category in ancient China, "Feng Gu" contains a china culture which deposited 5000 years. "Feng Gu" contains the vitality of life. The struggle spirit and the endless dedicate spirit.
