The cultural communication between China and Japan has a long history. In ancient times, Japanese culture and literature are mainly influenced by Chinese culture and literature. However, Japanese culture has its composite form, and this form of culture has strong adaptability and huge compatibility to different kinds of cultures. In modern times, Japanese culture and literature have more influenced the Chinese, especially the fighters who studied abroad in Japan in early 20th Century. Hence the influences of Japanese culture factor in the works of these modern writers cannot be ignored.Guo Moruo is the best example in the History of Modern Chinese Literature, which has gone through the collision and combination between Chinese and Japanese cultures. His life is a chief clue of exchange between Chinese culture and those abroad. Guo Moruo's thoughts on academic culture began from his studying abroad in Japan. As is known to all, compared with other modern Chinese writers, Guo is the longest sojourner who stayed in Japan. Guo is comprehensively influenced by Japanese culture, in such phases as experiences of creation, source of writing, esthetic pursuit and spirit of personality. From his early poems, novels, to the dramas during the War of Resistance and researches after the foundation of The People's Republic of China, the influences of Japanese culture to Guo is holistic, multiple and deep. Therefore, we should study the works from the cultural meaning, philosophical meaning, esthetic meaning and so on, even for the works during the War of Resistance. This thesis gives a new view of Guo's historical plays which were written in Chongqing during the War of Resistance, thereby new values of his play can be seen.This thesis discusses the influence of Japanese culture to Guo Moruo's historical plays from the following aspects. First is the solid foundation of creation. In many aspects such as topic selected, character shaping and people's customs, Japanese culture gives Guo plenty of experiences that help him to write better.Secondly, dispose of the ending to Guo's historical plays, he has some unique thoughts. For example, he unleashed the"Character of Flowering Cherry", which made death meaningful. Many of the roles in Guo's plays voluntarily chose to suicide, and they were similar with Japanese knight-errants.Thirdly, whatever happened to the writer, his esthetic tendency is eternal. In Japanese culture, human and nature have harmonious relationship. This point of view gives Guo not only a philosophy, but also an esthetic view and an art conception.
