The New College English Curriculum Requirements was issued by HigherEducation Bureau of People's Republic of China in January of 2004. It points outthat we should remold the existing unitary teacher-centered pattern byintroducing a new model with the help of multimedia and network technology. Thenew model should be built on information technology, particularly networktechnology so that English language teaching will gear toward individualized andautonomic learning which will be free from the constrain of time or place. Sincethe Requirements was issued, more than one hundred colleges began to try the newteaching model. Jilin Institute of Technology was one of them. We had made upa plan and carried it out in the freshmen of 2005. The theme was College EnglishTeaching Model in the View of the New Curriculum Requirements. The researching method was action research, which emphasis on researching for action,researching action and doing research in action . The purpose is not for a new theorybut for the improvement of teaching practice. In the course of researching , the teachershould observe and reflect his or her action directly or indirectly. At the same timecommunicating with specialists and coworkers in order to have a full understanding ofhis or her teaching practice and try to improve themselves.The paper, first of all, has a general introduction of The New College English CurriculumRequirements, the significance of the research and its method. Then analyzing the limits of thetraditional teaching model and focusing on the main topic we want to discuss. According to therequirements we regard that the new teaching model should be a individual -patterned,student-centered and web-based one. We have done some research on the related teachingmodels based on which we design ours. That is a teaching model based on combiningcooperative learning, independent learning and research learning;combining on line learningand classroom learning;combining web-based classroom and multi-media classroom;combining in-class teaching and after-class teaching. During practicing we have not only thespecial design and action but reflection as well. After one semester we did observation andquestionnaire ,which proved that we got a satisfactory result. In the part of discussion we probeon the related theories, the value of network, the role of the teacher and the ability of thestudents in the new model. We also have some suggestions for the improvement of the newteaching model.
