Literary Since the last of 20th century, the modern literature in China showed a pluralistictendency, which made a more polychrome pattern of esthetic on literature. The modernliterature pay more attention on people's subsistence, at the same time ,it is provided withself-reflecting power and animadverting power , while the most prominent phenomena is thatthere are lots of descriptions of "ugliness" in literature. So, hackling the esthetic conceptionof "ugliness" is instancy and necessity for the development and revolution of literature theoryin China currently.This dissertation has three parts in all.In the first part of the dissertation, I think the "ugliness" is always looked upon as anopposed conception of the "beauty" in the classicality esthetic, it is abandoned and prevented.The problem of the "ugliness" is actually denied. The "ugliness" stepped on the art stage as aspecialty esthetic category is in 1857 when the book "the flower of evil" of Bodelaier hadbeen published, and later the "ugliness" excessively used in literature,painting and manyother fields in art. The "ugliness" has belonged to the "beauty" for never, even replaced it andbecame the centre in the western art.In the second part, I think the view of beauty and ugliness in forepart China located in achaos situation, ethnics and esthetics are not detached. Zhuang Zi is the first person whoadvanced the "ugliness" conception in China. Taoism use the relativism view to recognize theworld, and understand the existence of the "ugliness" and "beauty" from there comparatively.Inheriting Taoism especially Zhuang Zi's view, it appeared an art of "convert ugliness tobeauty". After Ming dynasty, the "ugliness" was strongly pushed into people's view, it wasemphasized as a disharmonious factor day by day. But consciousness of ugliness don'tpossess its philosophy deepness and social basis like it in west.In the third part, it presents the reasons of the "ugliness" becoming the independentaesthetic concept in China as compared to that in west, and its construction in the moderntimes in China. And at the same time, after experiencing the stage of the traditional "beauty"to the stage of "ugliness" in contemporary, the literature and art in modern times would go tothe stage of synthesis.
