Based on the linguistic, sociolinguistic pragmatic theories as well as relevant psycholinguistic research findings, this thesis attempts to provide a multidimensional analysis of code-switching and explore the probability of its sustainable development in modern society.Code-switching in monolingual or multilingual settings is a universal yet complicated social phenomenon, which is one of the major subjects in sociolinguistics. In the past three decades, research on code-switching has achieved great progress. Many western scholars have given different theoretical explanations to code-switching from linguistic, sociolinguistic, psychological, and pragmatic perspectives, among which the most influential ones include the domain theory proposed by Fishman, the accommodation theory by Giles & Trudgill and the theory of markedness model by Myers-Scotton. However, their detailed studies of code-switching were mainly carried out through the analysis of daily conversations and few studies were done on code-switching phenomena in written work as well as in network language. Due to the limitation of times, many researchers' major concern lay in the conversational analysis. Besides, computers were not widely used for the average family as a kind of communication tool at that time. Only in recent years has the frequent use of network language been a subject of great scholarly attention. In some developing countries where national economics are undergoing internationalization and modern technology is being introduced from abroad, English as a tool of communication has been playing a pivotal role in acquiring cultural, scientific and technical knowledge, for collecting worldwide information and carrying out international exchange and cooperation. With the economic and cultural globalization in modern society, code-switching has been adopted more and more frequently not only in daily conversations, but also in written languages and cyber chat. Take newspaper as an example. People usually come across various code-switching patterns across sections or genres of the newspaper. And code-switching has become an important marker in the literary works of many contemporary writers to convey social meanings and a strategy to achieve a dramaticeffect. Moreover, with the development of science and technology, cyber chatting has become a very popular way of communication and entertainment among people of different ages. As a special variety of language, language used in network also belongs to an important form of code-switching and has aroused some linguists' attention.Despite the above important linguistic change, the corresponding research on code-switching in written language and language used in network chat still lags behind and the relevant theories need to be enriched so as to improve and perfect the study of code-switching.Through reviewing previous code-switching research findings and analyzing the status quo of the use of code-switching home and abroad, this thesis not only focuses on the analysis of various kinds of code-switching in modern society, but also probes into the positive correlation between code-switching and social development. A lot of vivid examples of code-switching are given to reveal various social motives and profound intentional meanings behind them. The author addresses and solves three research questions: (1) what are the functions of code-switching in modern society, (2) what are the restrictions underlying this complex language phenomenon and (3) whether code-switching corresponds to the social changes and has the great potentiality of sustainable development in modern society.Above all, this thesis points out the probability and necessity of the sustainable development of code-switching along with the rapid social economic changes. Meanwhile, the author suggests the advantages of code-switching should be fully displayed in modern society.
