Since the 1970s, Cooperative Learning has become a pervasive educational approach in the United States. Nowadays, Cooperative Learning has been a theoretical and strategic system applied by many countries in the world.Based on the literature review at home and abroad and latest revised College English Teaching Syllabus, the author thinks that the application of Cooperative Learning can change the traditional ways of English teaching, which pays too much attention to the explanation of grammar and vocabulary, and develop students'communicative competence. With a contrastive study of Cooperative Learning, the paper explores the effectiveness of Cooperative Learning in Foreign Language Teaching depending on cognitive developmental theory and second language acquisition theory. Through the quantitative and qualitative analysis on test scores, questionnaires and interview, the findings indicate that, after one semester treatment, students have improved a lot in their English study with Cooperative Learning, especially in listening, speaking and writing. The research has proved the effectiveness of carrying out Cooperative Learning approach in Foreign Language Teaching in China in increasing achievement, promoting students'involvement and improving learners'cognitive awareness and learning skills.
