This thesis finds its topic within the field of text-linguistics, and does a research on government boundaries in discourses, a specia 1 phenomenon in a discourse, as thoroughly as possible. It analyzes t his phenomenon in two angles: one is based on the inner structure of a language, of which the two basic grammatical relations - domination and coherent- infer the essential reason why government boundaries i n discourses are formed, namely, the coherence between language units; the other is based on psychology and cognitive science, which enable us to discover the relation between the people's attention and the formation of government boundaries in discourses. The brief introduction of each chapter is as follows: Chapter one: General Introduction. This chapter introduces the id eas of 'government boundary' and 'government boundary in discourse s' , origin of this problem, and current studies on this problem. Bes ides, this chapter demonstrates the basic study route, study methods, and meanings of this study.Chapter two:Essence of Government Boundaries in Discourses-Cohere nce. The chapter points out the two basic relations between language units: domination and coherence, and discovers that it is the coheren ce between language units that determines the formation of government boundaries in discourses.Chapter three: Basic Types of Government Boundaries in Discourses: verbs, adverbial modifiers, topic subjects.Chapter four: Over Japping of Government Boundaries in Discourses. This chapter mainly studies the co-appearance and interactions of different types of government boundaries in discourses, and discovers three anomalistic overlapping structures- intercrossing, faultage, andhollowness.Chapter five: Means of Ascertaining Terminal Boundaries of Government Boundaries. This chapter points out the existence of structuraland semantic overlapping, and that ideal government boundaries consist of the two kinds of overlapping, and un-ideal ones consist of onlysemantic overlapping. Finally, it reveals the detailed means of ascertaining the two terminal government boundaries and the characteristics of the two government boundaries.Chapter six explains the mental mechanism of government boundaries with the concept of noticing behaviors in psychology.
