The intention of this paper is to explore the role that autonomous learning plays in Second Language Acquisition. The author of this paper regards that autonomous learning plays a very important role in the process of acquiring a second language. Learners' internal factors, especially controllable factors, such as: motivation, individual effort, learning style, learning strategies, emotional factors, etc. will determine learners' final achievements; while intelligence, learning conditions, teaching methods, teaching conditions---- these uncontrollable factors will be to some extent just an enhancing helper. The author designed a questionnaire in terms of the factors which have effects on the success of SLA. The results of the questionnaire have not only proved the author's view, but also showed some learners' weaknesses in learning and their partial attitudes toward strategies and methods. And at the same time, through analyzing the data collected in the questionnaire, the author has found out some weak points existing in teacher's teaching practice. Based on the theories related to SLA and the analysis of the questionnaire, the author of the paper concludes that: raising learners' awareness of autonomous learning and developing their capacity to learn independently will be greatly helpful in improving their English proficiency. Finally the author proposes her own suggestions on how to implement learning autonomy in practice.
