Learner Autonomy is the ultimate goal of education. The basic purpose of foreign language teaching is to teach students how to learn more independently, autonomously and efficiently. Learning to learn means acquiring learning strategy, which is necessary for autonomous English learners. The study is an attempt to learner autonomy training through WMSSMI method (English Writing strategy, meta-cognitive strategy and self-management instruction) in writing process as well as in the whole learning process.Currently communicative Language Teaching is adopted in the teaching of College English. It emphasizes that the goal of language learning is to cultivate students' communicative competence and to make meaningful communication and language use a focus of all classroom activities. For lack of real environment, one of the efficient ways to improve the communicative competence of college students is to utilize language by written output. Yet, the previous writing researches were centered on writing in one certain stage or another with certain limitations.This thesis reviews studies relevant to autonomous learning and writing strategy at home and abroad and analyzes their limitations. The writer designed an experiment on the basis of writing strategy, meta-cognitive strategy & self-management instruction (i.e. WMSSMI method) with a view to cultivating and developing students' competence of autonomous learning and writing. The study takes into consideration some factors that are neglected in previous researches, such as process writing design, individual experience, needs analysis, strategy variables and students' cooperative learning in writing.
