In the new century computer technologies have a significant role to play in autonomous/ independent foreign language learning and pose considerable pedagogical challenges to the traditional teacher-centred mode. This paper provides an overview of e-learning for second and foreign language (L2/FL). It reviews the background of L2 e-learning and relates learning strategies that accommodate the changes in teaching methods. We focus on the VR (virtual reality) technology which is based on various technologies such as multimedia technology, interactive technology and speech recognition. As a successful Internet-enabled learning,"e-learning"depends on building a strategy that optimizes the technology within an organizational culture that is ready and willing to use it, thus the paper introduces some language learning strategies, and discusses the interrelationships between the affective variables and these strategies. Then we give some suggestions on how to be a successful learner in the e-learning circumstances and how to evaluate an e-learning system. And in this paper we also research the status quo of e-learning in China and the barriers to the widespread of computer-assisted language learning (CALL). Also we try to find some solutions to the problems in the practical application of e-learning in this paper. Finally we anticipate the prospects of e-learning in L2/FL.
