Poetry Translation In Crescent Moon

The Crescent Moon Club was a literary group, renowned for its assiduous study and industrious composition of verses, both of which outshone its translation thereof. The poetry translation by its luminous members receives adequate academic concern; however that by its peripheral members does not. Besides, the present study of the poetry translation in the defunct monthly Crescent Moon is far from enough, for it confines itself to listing names and titles concerned, wanting analysis and explanation.Drawing upon Lefevere's theory of poetics and translation, the thesis explores poetry translation in Crescent Moon, from within the literary system, that is, from the perspective of poetics, in the hope of unfolding the translation by this group during the six-year span. As an integral part of the study of the history of translated literature in journals, it addresses itself to a thorough and believed-to-be-first in-depth analysis and explanation of poetry selection and translation in the defunct monthly. The language, literary devices, form and musicality are under discussion.It is believed that both the mainstream and the Club poetics find fine expression in the verse translation in Crescent Moon. The poems selected for translation bear trim form and musical quality. They are translated into the vernacular of the 1920s and 1930s, characterized by the Chinese vernacular diction and by the Europeanized syntax, the latter of which mainly results from the literal translation of foreign sentences. The literary devices in them, which transcend the boundary of the foreign and Chinese poetics, are retained; those, which are bound to the foreign poetics either by cultural or linguistic peculiarities, are lost. Corresponding with the original ones, the translated poems bear the stamp of formal trimness, which is achieved by the orderly arrangement of characters.
