| Opera is regarded as an important art form of music in the history of human beings, and has been developed into one of various kinds in hundreds of years. Operetta is an important kind of opera, which just flourished in the period of the late 19th century and the early 20th century. Regardless of its short-term popularity, operetta manifested a trend from serious opera to popular opera, and played a significant role in connecting traditional opera with musical.This paper consists of two chapters. Chapter One describes systematically the history of operetta by introducing several influential operetta composers' creation. Chapter Two probes the artistic value of operetta from various aspects. In terms of the development of drama, the emergence of operetta enriches the world of drama highly. In terms of the sociology of music, it is inevitable to witness the emergence and the development of operetta; operetta alone is quite artistically valuable. Besides, as comprehensive art, operetta itself meets the aesthetic needs of the masses. |
