Through a self-portrait analysis and biographical researches, this dissertation is focused on the inherent relationship between the graphic meaning and the life of an artist. It manifests the essential characteristics of an artist's being in his self-portraits. This dissertation will help us understand the original meaning of arts and correct the pure conceptional identification in portrayal analysis.In Chapter one, the hard "existence" of an artist will be narrated from his dilemma, his natural gift, his loneliness and his social menace. In Chapter two, the intuitional artistic conception of an artist will be studied, on which a harmonious relationship is established between the water of life and artistic liberty. Meanwhile, the significance of an artist's individual talents and the internal logicality of classical spirit which are elevated in the intuitional artistic conception, will be pointed out. In Chapter Three, the clear proof of an individual artistic being will be grasped in his work through representations in color, form and structure of artistic works. In general, this dissertation concerns the individual philosophical existence of an artist and tries to reveal the life qualities of an artistic mind.
