Edward. W. Said is acknowledged by the West after World War Two as one of the most influential critics on literature and culture. It has been 27 years since his work Orientalism: Western Conceptions of the Orient was published, post-colonial criticism has become very popular in North America, China, many countries and areas. But as far as I know, many people still misunderstand the core conception of Said's cultural view, also deviate to well understand some basic notions in his theoretical system. Additionally, we can see perceptual appraisals here and there, but bits and pieces, one follows the other. Base on this situation, in this dissertation, I try to summarize Said's cultural views and re-explain some basic notions of his theory in the whole frame of western ideology, mainly from his works:Orientalism: Western Conceptions of the Orient, Culture and Imperialism, Representation of the Intellectual: The 1993 Reith Lectures, and Self-selections of Said.This dissertation consists of two parts, the first part mainly...
