This thesis discusses Alice Walker's The Color Purple from an ecofeminist perspective. Ecofeminist ideas are illustrated through the analysis of the relationship between women and nature, womanist spirit, pantheism and women's voice. Through the lens of ecofeminism, Alice Walker expresses her idea that everything on the earth is interconnected, that the animate and inanimate world should enjoy their diverse existences equally, and there should not be hierarchy or dominance. As ecofeminism is a new branch feminist theory, Alice Walker puts it into her writing and has contributed a lot to ecofeminist literature. The thesis is structured as follows: The first chapter will briefly introduce the development and main points of ecofeminism. Second chapter "Women-Nature Connections in The Color Purple" will first discuss the oppression of women and nature under the control of the patriarchy and then talks about the combination of women and nature shown in this novel. Third chapter will discuss Alice Walker's womanist spirit expressed in the novel that reveals her ecofeminist idea. The fourth chapter will illustrate ecofeminism ideas transmitted by the epistolary style.
