Driven by the urgent need of oral talents, there has been a surge of oral English learning accompanied by the coming out of all kinds of oral learning methods. However, recitation, a traditional method of literacy learning still widely practiced in china received very few investigation. In view of this, this paper made a tentative study to explore its efficiency in improving oral proficiency by applying it into the oral learning of vocational college students, in the hope of finding a good way for their oral learning.Specifically, in this paper, the research is undertaken with the main focus on exploring three questions: firstly, what effect does recitation have on learners' oral English performance? Or is recitation effective in improving oral fluency, accuracy and complexity? Secondly, what attitudes do learners in vocational college hold toward the method of reciting; thirdly, what reciting materials are preferred. In terms of research methodology, this research includes both qualitative and quantitative studies, such as literature review, interview and experimental study. By means of reviewing related oral development theories and recent empirical studies both abroad and domestic, the paper presents a conceptual understanding of the research questions and a holistic picture of oral development study. The experiment lasting one term was designed specifically for research question one. It was carried out to check what effect the recitation has on three separate aspects of oral proficiency. The results show that the progress in fluency is significant, while no significant improvement was found in other two aspects-accuracy and complexity. It's implied in this research findings that reciting does have good effect on learners' oral proficiency, but the effect to each aspect is not even. It has best effect on fluency while the demonstration of its effect on accuracy and complexity demands more time. The interview reveals that generally students hold positive attitude toward recitation. As for the limitations of this study, further studies on each separate aspect oforal performance needs more detailed study. | | Keywords/Search Tags: | Recitation, Oral English, Fluency, Accuracy, Complexity | PDF Full Text Request | Related items |
