In recent years, considerable attention has been given to the role of input modification in EFL learners' comprehension. However, studies on the effect of input modification on EFL comprehension are not so consistent. Moreover, few studies have explored the effects of syntactic simplification and syntactic elaboration on EFL reading comprehension.The present study intends to investigate the effects of two types of modification (i.e. syntactc simplification and syntactic elaboration) with a focus on the syntax domain in English, and to examine the syntactic modification effects on the three kinds of comprehension process (i.e. general, specific, or inferential comprehension). Therefore, the research questions to be addressed in the study are the following:1. To what degree, if any, do syntactic simplification, syntactic elaboration, or both, facilitate the reading comprehension of the intermediate-level Chinese-speaking English learners?2. Of the syntactic simplification and syntactic elaboration, which of the two can better facilitate the reading comprehension of the intermediate-level Chinese-speaking English learners?3. Is there any syntactic modification effects on the three kinds of comprehension process (i.e. general, specific, or inferential comprehension)?...
