Optimal Balance Of Textuality: An Approach To Translation Criteria

In light of the theory of textuality originating from the text linguistics, this thesis attempts to establish a new approach to translation criteria: the optimal balance of the textuality in ST and the TT, through the detailed analysis of E-C translation examples from the two Chinese versions of Tess of the D'Urbervilles. Based on the original theory of textuality put forward by Beaugrande and Dressler and other researchers'related theories, the author proposes a modified model of textuality analysis, which is composed of 4 parameters: intentionality, texture, context, and acceptability.Furthermore, the two Chinese versions of Hardy's famous novel Tess of the D'Urbervilles, both of which enjoy the fame as excellent translations, are assessed in line with the 4 parameters of textuality to verify that only those translation versions which have appropriately rebuilt the balanced textuality in the TT could be counted as good translations.
