Noetic Science is a newly developed discipline proposed by Academician Qian Xuesen in the early 1980's in China. It aims to study how the brains of human beings get and deal with the information from the objective world through their thought. The Noetic Science covers the sciences of three levels, namely the Fundamental Science, the Technological Science and the Project Technology. The Fundamental Science is composed by the Science of Thought and Informatics. Being the central part of the Fundamental Science, the Science of Thought focuses its study on how the different methods of thinking including logic/abstract thinking, figurative thinking and inspirational thinking work in the thinking process.Drawing on the theories of the Science of Thought, this thesis introduces the characteristics of the three basic thinking methods and analyzes the application of these methods to translation activity. The research on the stages and processes of different thinking methods intervening into the process of translation helps reveal the thinking activity of translator in translation. The paper falls into three parts, the first describing the relationship between language and thought, the second further analyzing the essence of translation and the relationship between translation and thought, and the third elaborating the application of three basic thinking methods to translation activity. The author points out in the conclusion that the three basic thinking methods are main and important methods in translation thinking activity. Although they have different working processes, they work together to ensure the smooth movement of translation activity. The research on the three thinking methods helps us get into the internal mechanism of translation activity. We sincerely hope that further study on the Science of Thought will contribute more to the Science of Translation.
