| Yan Fu, one of the most prominent and influential translators in China, has been studied extensively for more than a century. However, in most of these studies, the researches on Yan Fu's works focus on the faithfulness by comparing the original texts and the translations, leading to biased and unfair judgments on Yan Fu's translation.Incorporating socio-cultural factors in translation, Translation Studies greatly expands the vision and domain of this discipline. AndréLefevere is a prominent member of Translation Studies, whose theories have a significant and enduring impact on the field of translation. Based on AndréLefevere's theory, the thesis aims at exploring the manipulation of ideology in Yan Fu's translation A Short History of Politics. The case study includes his choice of the work, the translation strategies employed in his translation practice and the rewritings of the original contents. This thesis is divided into six chapters:Chapter One is an introduction, in which the background of the study, the research questions and aims are stated.Chapter Two gives a brief introduction to the development and main ideas of Translation Studies, especially to AndréLefevere's theory of translation which is the theoretical frame of the present thesis. On the basis of Lefevere's definition of poetics, the author puts poetics into the category of cultural ideology.Chapter Three is a detailed description of the socio-cultural information related to Yan Fu and his translation A Short History of Politics, including the social background of Yan Fu's translation, a brief account of Yan Fu's life and some information on Jenks'A Short History of Politics.Chapter Four analyzes the ideologies influencing Yan Fu's translation during 1898—1904, when he had translated A Short History of Politics.
